The Bile Duct System is Shaped like a Tree Called the Biliary Tree or Biliary Tract

Bile Duct Cancer happens when cancer cells attack the bile ducts, often causing a blockage, leading to serious health problems.

Bile Duct Cancer can happen INSIDE the Liver and this is called INTRAHEPATIC bile duct cancer. Intra means "inside" and hepatic means "liver".

This can happen in the right or left hepatic (liver) ducts.

Bile Duct Cancer can also happen OUTSIDE the Liver and this is called EXTRAHEPATIC bile duct cancer. This can happen in the common bile duct.

Bile Duct Cancer can also happen further away from the Liver and this is called DISTAL bile duct cancer. This can happen after the common bile duct joins the pancreatic duct.
